Avocado Cultivation with Smart Irrigation Systems

Avocado is grown on 5 continents and in nearly 50 countries worldwide. Due to the limited cultivation areas of avocado, its high nutritional value, and its unique taste, its market value is quite high. The consumption of this species, which has a very high export potential, is gradually increasing, especially in many countries with high economic income levels.

The land allocated for avocado cultivation needs to be protected from strong winds and cold. Avocado, which is a subtropical plant, is grown in regions with mild winters. In our country, avocado cultivation is carried out in the Mediterranean coastal belt.

Solve the Plant's Water Requirement in Avocado Cultivation with Smart Irrigation Systems

The annual amount of water required by avocado trees is at levels of 600-700 mm. The irrigation amount and irrigation interval should be watered enough to wet the root zone every 7-10 days depending on the size of the tree, climate, and soil characteristics, and excessive irrigation should be avoided.

In determining the irrigation time, the start and end times of effective rains in the region are very important. The most irrigation should be done in July and August, which are the hottest months of the year. During these months, saplings and trees should not be left without water. If left without water, severe fruit drops occur.

Thanks to smart irrigation systems, because we provide water frequently in small amounts and thanks to the smart sensors we use, the balance of water, air, and fertilizer in the soil is easily adjusted. By keeping the water status in the soil at the level required by the plant, we protect our avocado plant, which is affected by stresses such as excess water, insufficient water, excessive fertilizer, etc. This process increases both yield and product quality.

Advantages of Drip Irrigation in Avocado Cultivation

Drip irrigation systems are quite common in avocado cultivation. This system has many advantages and is recommended for newly established facilities. This irrigation system saves time and labor. At the same time, it allows for fertilizer application to the trees along with irrigation and weed control since not too much area is irrigated.

Since irrigation water is used more effectively, drip irrigation systems are used in places where irrigation water is limited.
