‘Meadow Caterpillar’ Invasion in Sunflower Fields in Thrace
Sunflower fields planted in thousands of decares in Thrace have been invaded by the ‘meadow caterpillar’. Against the meadow caterpillar, which damages the plant starting from the root up to the leaf and seed parts, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry urgently warned producers to conduct aerial spraying with drones.
In Thrace, the ‘meadow caterpillar’ has invaded the sunflower fields, which have bloomed, painting the fields yellow and are called ‘yellow bride’ by their farmers. The caterpillar, which is effective in Edirne city center, Havsa, Uzunköprü, İpsala, and Enez districts, as well as in Tekirdağ and Kırklareli, causes great yield loss by eating the plant starting from the root up to the leaf and seed parts.
Meadow caterpillars seen in the Karaağaç Neighborhood in Edirne caused damage by eating almost the entire plant.
Taking action against the meadow caterpillar, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry started working on the 2nd day of Eid al-Adha, including the city center, and conducted inspections in the fields. The teams warned producers to perform urgent aerial spraying with drones against the caterpillar. In the statement made by the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, it was said:
“As a result of the inspections carried out, considering the life cycle of the pest, since the next few days are of great importance for our producers not to be harmed in the fight against the pest, they must carry out checks in their own sunflower fields and, in case they encounter the pest, they must carry out chemical control without wasting time using ground tools and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) as soon as possible. In the checks carried out in the fields of our farmers who performed spraying, it has been determined that the recommended drugs with the active ingredient deltamethrin 25 g./l. completely killed the pest.”
