What is DAP Fertilizer? What Does It Do?

DAP fertilizer (Diammonium Phosphate) is a fertilizer in crystal and granular form that provides nitrogen and phosphorus to plants. Generally widely used in the agricultural sector, DAP is used to meet the basic nutritional needs of plants. Considering that agricultural areas in Turkey are across a wide range, the use of DAP fertilizer also holds an important place in various agricultural products. It is used in the cultivation of many products such as cereals, corn, cotton, vegetables, and fruits. DAP fertilizer helps to strengthen root systems, encourage germination, and increase plant health during the initial periods of plants.

What is DAP Fertilizer?

In our country, DAP fertilizer is a type of phosphorus fertilizer widely used in the agricultural sector. Containing 18% nitrogen and 46% phosphorus pentoxide, DAP is especially preferred during the initial periods of plant growth. Nitrogen is an important nutrient for the general growth of plants, foliage formation, and protein synthesis. Phosphorus is important due to its critical roles in root development, flowering, and fruit formation.

What are the Benefits of DAP Fertilizer?

The benefits provided by the use of this fertilizer, which offers many advantages in the agricultural sector, are as follows;

  • Thanks to the high rate of phosphorus in its content, it contributes to the healthy and balanced growth of plants. Phosphorus plays a critical role in basic processes such as root development, flowering, and fruit formation of plants.
  • DAP strengthens the root systems of plants, encourages seed germination, and can increase the resistance of plants.
  • DAP fertilizer provides ease of storage, transport, and application thanks to its granular form.
  • Phosphorus plays an important role in basic biochemical processes such as energy transfer, photosynthesis, and the formation of genetic material in plants.
  • It is especially preferred in soils with high phosphorus requirements and increases productivity by balancing plant nutrients in these soils.

Considering these advantages, DAP fertilizer is an effective type of fertilizer widely used to increase plant health and productivity in agricultural applications.

In Which Plants is DAP Fertilizer Used?

This fertilizer is used in many plant species because its phosphorus content is high. It is preferred to provide phosphorus in processes such as root development, flowering, and fruit formation of plants. Some plant species where DAP fertilizer can be used are as follows:

Cereals: Cereal types such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats need sufficient phosphorus, especially for root development and ear formation.

Corn: Demands high phosphorus during the growth period. DAP fertilizer helps to strengthen the root system of corn and increase productivity.

Cotton: Needs plenty of phosphorus during flowering and fruit formation periods.

Vegetables: Especially root vegetables (carrots, onions, potatoes) and fruit-bearing vegetables (peppers, tomatoes). Phosphorus is important in the development stages of these vegetables.

Fruit Trees: Fruit trees such as apples, pears, and peaches grow healthier and more productively by being supported with phosphorus provided from DAP fertilizer during flowering and fruit formation periods.

Vineyards and Orchards: Vineyards, strawberry fields, and other orchards can benefit from DAP fertilizer.

These plant species are given only as examples. DAP fertilizer should be used in the correct doses and timing according to soil analysis results, the growth period of the plant, and its needs.

When and How is DAP Fertilizer Used?

Using the fertilizer at the right time and in the right amounts contributes significantly to plant development. While fertilization done at the right time increases productivity by meeting plant needs, applications made at the wrong time cause fertilizer waste. When DAP fertilizer is used during seed sowing or seedling planting, it gives the most effective results. Fertilizer applied at the correct depth during sowing or planting is optimally taken up by plant roots. Therefore, it also contributes to the increase in yield. Generally, it is used in the sowing period in cereals. In fruit cultivation, it is used in the months of February and March. Spring periods stand out in vegetable garden preparation.

How Much DAP Fertilizer is Applied per Decare?

The amount of fertilizer is determined depending on the crop type and soil analysis results. Publications of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry provide information on determining the amount of fertilizer according to the phosphorus requirement obtained as a result of soil analysis. For example, a 6.6 kilogram phosphorus requirement determined as a result of soil analysis determines the amount of DAP 18-46-0 to be used per decare. In this way, fertilization can be carried out efficiently and in accordance with plant needs.
