Leghorn Chicken
The real name of the Leghorn chicken breed is the word “Leghorn” of Italian origin, and it is a breed originating from the Netherlands. These chickens are introduced as “Fed with little feed, giving many eggs.” These chickens can be aggressive and can produce white eggs when raised in artificial environments. Leghorn chickens can provide high egg yield up to four years of age if they are fed correctly and kept in a suitable coop. The Leghorn breed, which belongs to the category of egg chickens, is generally not raised as a meat chicken because it is smaller than other breeds. Leghorn, which is an important chicken species worldwide, draws attention with its high egg yield. Today, it is known to have the highest egg yield. Leghorn chickens feed by consuming little feed and provide high egg yield, therefore they hold an important place among poultry.
Leghorn Chicken Characteristics
Leghorn chickens primarily start laying eggs at the 16th week in those raised in artificial environments, while this period can go up to the 20th week in those raised organically. Furthermore, annual egg yield also varies depending on the rearing environment. Of course, chickens fed in a natural environment have an advantage over those raised in an artificial environment in terms of egg quality and resistance to diseases. This situation clearly shows the differences between organic and artificial farming not only specifically for the Leghorn chicken breed but also in other chicken breeds. Experts are in general consensus that chickens should be in a natural environment as much as possible and grow by benefiting from natural foods. While there are many different types of the Leghorn chicken breed, types such as Silver Leghorn, red Leghorn, brown Leghorn, etc., stand out with their characteristics of growing faster compared to other egg chickens and generally not stopping egg production. For this reason, it is a chicken breed preferred by chicken breeders; especially Leghorn chickens that are well-fed during the pullet period are long-lived and can provide high egg yield.
Is the Leghorn Chicken Hardy?
Of course, there are a number of factors affecting the lifespan and hardiness of the chicken. Among the factors determining the lifespan and hardiness of the chicken, factors such as the adequacy of the hygiene conditions of the coop where it is fed, the complete presentation of basic and supportive nutrients to the chicken, and free-range type feeding are important. Leghorn chickens can live up to 6 years under healthy care and suitable conditions.

While Leghorn chickens can give 320-340 eggs per year in artificial conditions, this number drops to between 290-310 in a natural environment.
