In the goal of sustainable cities and living spaces, which is Article 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals, it is aimed to make “cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.”
Sustainable cities and living spaces are related to all dimensions of the sustainable development goals. Poorly managed urbanization has a direct or indirect impact on many sustainable development goals such as climate change, ecosystems, energy security, waste management, housing, urban mobility, etc. Therefore, poorly managed urbanization poses a major threat to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Some of the links between Sustainable Cities and Living Spaces and other Sustainable Development Goals are quite clear. For example; SDG 1 on poverty or access to basic services, SDG 3 on health, SDG 4 on quality education, SDG 5 on gender equality, SDG 7 on affordable and clean energy, SDG 8 on balanced economic growth, SDG 9 on building sustainable infrastructure and promoting sustainable industrialization, SDG 12 on sustainable production and consumption, SDG 13 on climate action, SDG 15 on life on land, SDG 16 on a peaceful management approach, and SDG 17 on partnerships and means of implementation, etc. If you take action for Sustainable Cities and Living Spaces, you can create a positive impact on all of the above goals. If you want to intervene in climate change, you must take SDG 11 into account. If you want to focus on the coast, rural and terrestrial life, quality in education, and development in industry, you must focus on the sub-targets of SDG 11.
Since 2007, half of the people, i.e., 3.5 billion people, have been living in cities. Estimates show that by 2030, cities will host 60% of the global population, and this share will increase to approximately 68.4% by 2050. Between 2010 and 2050, it is estimated that 2.5 to 3 billion people will be added to the urban population worldwide. Furthermore, 60-80% of energy consumption and 75% of carbon emissions occur in cities. Considering these rates, sustainable cities and living spaces are becoming an increasingly critical goal for achieving sustainable development goals.
In line with this objective, the strengthening of infrastructure for smart cities, the implementation of urban transportation, public transit, and waste management, providing accessible and affordable transportation systems, providing access to safe and secure public spaces for all, ensuring energy and resource efficiency, solving the slum problem, and increasing the resilience of cities must be ensured.
