How Does a Solenoid Valve Work? What is a Solenoid Valve?

How does a solenoid valve work, what is a solenoid valve, solenoid valves or in other words solenoid valves are valve types used in very wide areas such as industry, factories, automobiles, and agricultural irrigation and providing control with electrical signals. They are frequently used due to their practical structures, fast response, and ease of use.

In this article, we will briefly look at the operating principles of solenoid valves and provide information about their basic features.

What is a Solenoid Valve?

selenoid smart valve

What is a Solenoid Valve? Solenoid valve; is the name given to electromagnetic valves used for the purpose of controlling various fluids such as water, air, steam, and gas.

Solenoid valve: It can also be said that it is an automatic control valve consisting of main parts called coil-socket, tube-core, body-cover, and sealing element.

A solenoid valve consists of 4 main parts.

1. Coil-socket group
2. Tube - Core group
3. Body - Cover group
4. Sealing o-ring - diaphragm group

What do these 4 main parts forming the solenoid valve do?

Coil - socket and tube - core; are one of the most important parts where electrical energy is given to the solenoid valve. The coil must work very well synchronized with the tube-core group. For this reason, every solenoid valve brand has its own special coil.

Body - cover and diaphragm, sealing group; this section, which is the main body group of the solenoid valve, is the section where fluids (air, water, steam, gas, etc.) pass. This section is designed according to the flow rate, pressure, type, temperature of the fluid, and the position of the valve (N.C. or N.O.). The Body-Cover and the diaphragm, the sealing element, must be very compatible.

How Does a Solenoid Valve Work?

How does a solenoid valve work, Solenoid valves work in their most basic operating mode by opening and closing with the up and down movement of the pressure rod via electromagnetic methods. Their basic task is to prevent the passage of fluid in liquid or gas state. There are different types of operating principles, such as continuously energized or what is called the latching type, which can maintain its position for a long time without giving energy as a result of a single trigger.

Solenoid valves are generally divided into 2 main groups in terms of operating principle.

1.  Direct-acting solenoid valves.
2.  Pilot controlled Latching solenoid valves.

How Does a Direct-Acting Solenoid Valve Work?

How does a direct-acting solenoid valve work, the direct-acting solenoid valve body is primarily connected to the pipeline in the direction of the fluid flow according to the arrow on the body.

selenoid smart valve

Direct-acting solenoid valve consists of valve body, tube, core, coil, and socket. Its sealing is provided by the o-ring in the tube coupling part and the sealing element mounted on the core in the lower part of the core.
If the solenoid valve connected to the pipeline is a normally closed type (one that does not allow fluid to pass when not energized), the valve must change position for the fluid to pass to the other output side. That is, it must change from N.C. state to N.O. (normally open) state. This depends on conditions. The only condition here is to provide electricity to the coil on the solenoid valve with an electrical energy at the voltage written on it. When the coil is energized with the correct energy (+ / - 10,15% error), it will pull the core (plunger) inside the tube upwards. When the core pressing on the orifice in the valve body moves upwards, the path of the fluid waiting at the orifice inlet will be opened. The opened fluid will continue its progress in the pipe by passing through the output side of the valve. This situation continues until the electrical energy on the coil is cut off. When the electrical energy is cut off, the coil releases the core, and the core closes the orifice on the body again by pressing it with its own weight along with the spring force on it. Fluid flow stops. The solenoid valve returns to its initial N.C. (normally closed) position.

solenoid valve control

In a direct-acting solenoid valve, the diameter of the orifice in the valve body is very important. It can be opened in a diameter that will pass the required flow rate. But it can be at most 9 mm in diameter. It can be at least 1 mm. The diameter of this orifice also affects the operating pressure of the valve. Since the coil power remains the same as the orifice gets larger, the operating pressure of the valve decreases.

Latch Solenoid Valves

Latch solenoid valves generally work like solenoid valves. The most basic difference is that, unlike standard solenoid valves, it is not necessary to give continuous energy to open them. Thanks to the mechanism inside the valve, it is sufficient to trigger it by applying electrical energy only in the forward and backward directions.

These types of valves are generally preferred in battery-powered irrigation systems. These valves are suitable for operating with DC voltage between 6-12V. Due to their structure and operating principles, they can be controlled with batteries for a quite long time.

Our Fields of Activity

esular smart automatic irrigation system application areas

We reduce your costs with drip irrigation automation in places where water resources are scarce. Thanks to wirelessly controllable hydraulic valves, water is distributed equally to every point of the field and all are controlled from a single point.

In modern greenhouses, we make irrigation management fully automatic to keep greenhouse production at the desired level, improve product quality, and keep the pH balance under control.

We enable you to use and manage the world's most valuable resource in the most efficient way without the need for cabling and external power supply in all your agricultural lands. Whether you determine your irrigation scenario or perform fully automatic irrigation.

We provide more efficient and effective irrigation by making valves smart in landscape irrigation. With remotely controllable valves and remotely updated scenarios, all control is in your hands.

In golf and football fields, homogeneous irrigation is ensured by controlling flow and pressure values. All valves and pumps can be controlled remotely without laying cables.

Smart irrigation city projects

Smart Cities

In smart city applications, we ensure that irrigation zones are irrigated on time and as desired with sensors that can work wirelessly and with internal batteries for over 10+ years. No more sprinklers irrigating when it rains.
