Where is Merino Sheep Raised in Turkey?

Merino sheep are raised in different regions across Turkey. This sheep species has a structure that can adapt to various climatic and geographical conditions of the country. Merino sheep breeding is common especially in the Marmara, Aegean, Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, Southeastern Anatolia, and Black Sea regions.

Marmara Region: Provinces such as Bursa and Balıkesir are among the suitable regions for Merino sheep breeding.

Aegean Region: Aegean cities such as Izmir and Manisa are also important regions for Merino sheep breeding.

Central Anatolia Region: Central Anatolian provinces such as Ankara and Konya are favorable areas for raising Merino sheep.

Eastern Anatolia Region: Provinces such as Elazığ and Erzurum are among the regions where Merino sheep breeding is carried out in the east of Turkey.

Southeastern Anatolia Region: Southeastern Anatolian provinces such as Şanlıurfa and Diyarbakır are also regions where Merino sheep breeding is practiced.

Black Sea Region: In the Black Sea, provinces such as Trabzon and Rize offer suitable areas for Merino sheep breeding depending on climatic conditions.

Merino sheep are generally raised in flocks, on wide pastures or in suitable barns. Farmers in these regions can raise Merino sheep for the purpose of wool and meat production.

History of Merino sheep and its entry into Turkey

Approximately 800 years ago, sheep raised in Western Anatolia (Phrygia) were known for their famous high-quality wool. During this period, the city of Miletus had gained fame for its woolen fabrics. These sheep were later transported to Greece, Italy, and then by the Romans via Africa to Spain. The Merino breed was imported from Spain for the first time in 1843. In order to meet the need for fine wool, Spanish combed wool Merinos began to be raised at the Karacabey Stud Farm in Bursa and reached 80-90 thousand heads over time. However, due to the Capitulations at the beginning of the 20th century, the entry of duty-free and cheap woolen fabrics into the country led to the collapse of the local wool weaving industry and a decrease in Merino breeding. Since the first years of the Republic, work has been started to revive Merino breeding. In 1933, a crossbreeding of German Mutton Merino and Kivircik was carried out at the Karacabey Agricultural Enterprise, and this work continued with the crossbreeding method until 1950. Since the project was not completed within 15 years to obtain the targeted 5 million Merino hybrids, Merinoization efforts were shifted from the Marmara and Aegean regions to Central and Eastern Anatolia and the Black Sea region.

How Many Lambs Does a Merino Sheep Have?

Merino sheep have quite high reproductive yields. Generally, they have between 1 and 3 lambs at each birth. However, this number can vary depending on genetic factors, the age of the sheep, health status, and the conditions in which it is raised. Generally, a healthy Merino sheep can have an average of 1.5 lambs at each birth. The birth weight of the lambs varies between 4.5 to 5 kilograms and they grow and mature rapidly. The twinning rate is 70-80%. The milk yield of Merinos is at a quite satisfactory level; the lactation milk yield varies between 70 to 80 liters. In addition, the lactation period continues for 140 days.

How many times a year does a Merino sheep give birth?

Sheep with good care and feeding conditions give birth 3 times in 2 years, while merino can give birth 2 times in 1 yearKnown for their high reproductive capacity, this sheep breed can give birth twice a year under suitable conditions. However, this may change depending on conditions, nutrition, and breeding practices.

Is Merino Sheep Meat Delicious?

Merino sheep meat is generally delicious and tender. However, the flavor of the meat depends not only on the breed of the sheep but also on nutrition, raising conditions, and the slaughtering process. The meat of Merino sheep is generally fine-fibered and contains low fat, which contributes to the meat being tender and delicious. The fact that the sheep was well-fed before slaughter and that stress was avoided can positively affect the quality of the meat. Additionally, the correct processing and cooking of the meat can also be effective on the flavor. For this reason, Merino sheep meat is generally a preferred type of meat, but flavor may vary according to personal preferences.
