Nature Calendar

Nature Calendar is one of the traditional calendars used in Anatolia and shows natural events that may occur at certain times. Traditional Calendars are created by observing situations such as natural events, climate conditions, etc., over many years instead of scientific data and appear before us as the product of a deep-rooted, rich tradition. When the ram mating will be done, when the midwinter (zemheri) will end, which product will be planted when is determined according to the calendar formed as a result of this deep-rooted tradition. We have compiled the important time periods in the Nature calendar by giving brief information for you.

February 16: Tree planting time

 Sapling planting time is between the dates of November-February. In regions where winter is not harsh, autumn planting is known to ensure better development of the root system.

February 20: 1st cemre falling (to the air)

The falling of the cemre to the air, which symbolizes the arrival of spring every year. The date for the first cemre to fall to the air has been determined. Accordingly; the first cemre will fall to the air on February 20.

February 27: 2nd cemre falling (to the water)

The second cemre will fall to the water. It has been determined that the second cemre, which will fall to the water, will fall on February 26-27.

March 5: Sap rising in trees

According to the nature calendar, the first days of March are the "time for sap to rise in trees". With its leaves starting to liven up, it is known as the time for trees to wake up from a deep winter sleep.

March 6: 3rd cemre falling (to the soil)

The third cemre, which will fall to the soil, will fall on March 5-6. We are in the month of March in the Nature's Calendar. With the 3rd cemre falling to the soil in March, nature is now completely waking up. All living things have entered the rush of growth and development.

March 8: Vineyard pruning time

The most suitable period for pruning is the end of February and the beginning of March. A vineyard that has not shed its leaves should never be pruned, otherwise the vine cannot store enough organic compounds. Because of this, its resistance to winter decreases, weak shoots form, and yield drops.

March 9: Cleft grafting time

Trees planted 1-2 years ago for the purpose of establishing a vineyard are grafted from the soil level. Grafting time is the period in February-March before the bleeding begins in the vines. When vines are cut just before bleeding, they secrete a sticky liquid from the cut site.

March 10: Sap rising in vines

Sap rising in the vine means that the vine, which has been almost in its sleep all winter, is now awake and turning green. Depending on the climate conditions of the planting site, watering on average once every 15 days according to the bottom dryness of the sapling is sufficient for grape saplings. Otherwise, it is known that fungal diseases occur in grape saplings that are heavily watered.

March 11: Beginning of old wives' colds

The old wives' colds, known as the coldest days at the end of winter, can be defined as a natural event that brings ice-cold weather in the middle of March, the herald of spring.

March 15: End of old wives' colds

The general name for the 7 days in the middle of March when the cold weather continues below normal is known as Berdül Acüz. Although it is the period when winter is felt most harshly, Berdül'acüz, which makes the footsteps of spring heard, is experienced between March 11-17.

March 22: Ninth of March (snow may fall)

 Nine days after the ninth of March, the day called "Ninth of the Ninth" comes, on this day the weather becomes very cold; even storms or snow can be seen. What does March 9th mean?

It has been seen that the air temperature drops to 20-25 degrees below zero at night; there may be frost and snowstorms or sleet called "Şıvgın" may fall.

March 30: Greening of trees

It is the period when trees begin to bud and turn green. These are suitable days for leafy vegetables (such as cabbage, spinach) and irrigation.

March 31: End of the ninth of March

Nine days after the ninth of March, the day called "Ninth of the Ninth" comes, on this day the weather becomes very cold; even storms or snow can be seen. Cold strikes newly awakening or blooming trees.

April 2: Time for flowers to bloom

As of April 2, flower buds begin to bloom.

April 14: Greening of tulips

The famous Red Muş Tulip begins to decorate the plains with the arrival of spring. The tulips that grow spontaneously in the rural areas of Muş begin to surround the plain by showing up early this year with the early warming of the weather.

April 18: Fifth of April (buffalo breaker – 5 days)

It is mentioned as the "Abrul Beşi storm" in the nature calendar. It is believed that during the warming period of the weather, it suddenly becomes extremely cold and stormy, and spring arrives afterwards.

May 18: Blooming of roses

In the Anatolian Folk calendar (old wives' calendar), May 18 is mentioned as the time for roses to bloom.

May 20: Engirkıran (snow may fall)

In the folk calendar and storm calendar, the storm corresponding to May 20 is called the engirkıran storm. It is possible to encounter snowfall in certain regions during these days.

June 23: Bud grafting time

The scions necessary for grafting are taken during the dormant season and stored until grafting time. Bud grafting starts at the end of May or the first weeks of June and continues until July.

July 16: Increase in temperatures

Between July-August is the time when temperatures increase rapidly and are at their highest.

July 26: Veraison (color change) in grapes

Veraison (alaca düşmesi) occurs in grapes in mid-July, and they ripen in August.

July 29: End of bud grafting

Bud grafting should be done between July 28-29. Grafting after this date becomes unproductive.

August 15: Ripening of fruits

In this month, grapes begin to ripen. The grapevine moth is harmful at almost every stage, from the clusters in the sumac stage to the tiny grape clusters in the neferiye stage. 

August 26: Yellowing of leaves

At the end of this month, leaves slowly begin to turn yellow.

September 3: Ripening of August fruits

With this month, August fruits ripen and are collected.

September 7: Harvesting of vegetables

As of September 7, vegetables are collected and meet with the consumer.

September 9: Walnut harvesting time

In our country, walnut collection is done in the autumn season and in September. The best time to collect walnuts is known as the time when one-third of the green part of the walnut begins to crack. 

September 19: Vintage (grape harvest) time

In general, vintage time can be from mid-September to the beginning of October. The reason for the variation in the date is the weather conditions in the climates where grapes are produced. 

September 28: Decrease of sap in trees

October 20: Tree planting time

October and November are particularly suitable for saplings that bloom early, shrubs that shed their leaves in winter, hedge plants, and small trees whose weeds and roots have been cleaned and stored in cold storage or warehouses. 

October 30: Tree pruning time

Tree pruning season is known as the time when leaves are shed and spring begins. Therefore, the most suitable period is between November 15 and March 15. Fruit trees are also pruned on the same date. 

November 29: Withdrawal of sap from trees

With this date, the withdrawal of sap from fruit trees begins.

December 9: End of leaf fall
